Ann Aspnes

I received my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Duke University. I am an expert in Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (CBT), certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).

For over 10 years prior to building my own practice, I worked for the Veterans Health Administration as a national trainer for other therapists in Evidence Based Psychotherapy – treatments proven to work through research. I built my practice on my love for helping people grow through painful life experiences and stress with a combination of practical skills, research-backed treatment, and compassion.

Sleep Problems

Cognitive Behavioral Therapies are among the most powerful treatments for lasting recovery from common sleep problems, like insomnia. In many cases, 6-8 sessions can get you back on track to consistent, restful sleep.

These are some of the common sleep problems that I can help you with:

  • Insomnia
  • Circadian Rhythm Disorders
  • Nightmare Disorder
  • Shift-Work Disorder
  • Improving CPAP use for Sleep Apnea and Snoring

When you have suffered painful events in the past, it may seem like you carry these memories with you all the time. Believe it or not – your brain is trying to adapt to the intense pain you have survived. But it’s not working and you stay stuck. Evidence Based Psychotherapies for trauma are proven treatments to help you get unstuck. Many people begin to feel better within 10-12 weeks.

I can help. I am an expert in working with clients using Evidence Based Psychotherapy, like Problem-Solving, Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, to heal from past traumas. I have years of experience helping clients learn to put past events behind them and feel safe again. Let me help you get back into your life.

You feel bounced between hope and despair. You wonder if you will ever have a child, be a parent, have the life you imagined. Infertility can be heart-wrenching. You have to make decisions that all feel so critical, so painful, but you don’t know what the outcome will be. All at the same time, you are trying to keep the rest of your life together and put on a brave face for your work, your friends, your family, and your community.

You are not alone. You are experiencing very normal emotions on a very painful and unexpected journey. I can support you, so you have a place for the grief and sadness that come with the losses and disappointments. I am also here to help you make room for hope and self-acceptance. We can work together to take care of you, tackle those difficult decisions, and build the interpersonal skills to assert what you need.

Clinical Consultation

In additional to psychotherapy services, I offer consultation and supervision for mental healthcare clinicians in Evidence Based Psychotherapies. During my 10+ years with the Department of Veterans Affairs, I served as faculty member of the VA/UMB Psychology Internship Consortium in Baltimore, a national training program Consultant for Prolonged Exposure and Motivational Interviewing VA Dissemination Initiatives, and National Trainer and Program Coordinator for the VA Problem Solving Training Program. Additionally, I completed intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy during my graduate work at Duke University and served as regional expert within the Maryland VA Healthcare System, providing consultation and supervision in DBT as well as related skills-based interventions for trauma recovery.

I offer supervision/consultation to clinicians in the following treatment modalities:

  • Prolonged Exposure
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy
  • Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation for Childhood Abuse Survivors
  • Problem Solving Therapy
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy

I am passionate about Evidence Based Psychotherapy and consultation/supervision. I would love to help you improve your skills. Therapists who use Evidence Based Psychotherapies, like CBT and DBT, often report feeling more invigorated by how quickly and effectively they can support clients to reduce symptoms, improve wellness, and embrace their goals.
